Entry Requirement:

Applicants are required to meet one of the entry requirements below:

  • Leaving Certificate/Under 23 Years of Age: A minimum of grade D in at least five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination, including Mathematics and a language, is also required. Leaving certificate students/applicants under 23 years of age wishing to avail of the programme on a FULL-TIME bases must apply through the CAO.  Applicants under 23 years of age wishing to avail of the programme on a PART-TIME basis must apply directly to NCPII.

OR

  • FETAC Award: A relevant FETAC level 5 or 6 major award. Such applicants may be required to complete a short interview. FETAC applicants may apply directly to the College or through the CAO.

OR

  • Mature Applicants: Applicants over the age of 23 may be admitted to the programme on the basis of relevant life and work experience. All mature applicants will be required to undertake a short interview. Mature applicants must apply directly to the College.

All applicants are expected to be fluent and competent in both written and spoken English. In the case of overseas applications students will have to provide certification of competency in English indicating a minimum score of 5.5 IELTS or 183 (CBT)/65 (IBT) TOEFL.

Programme Overview:

The BA (Hons) in Childhood and Adolescent Care and Practice is a new and innovative programme both in terms of its design and content. The degree focuses on childhood and adolescent development across the developmental spectrum from birth to adolescence and young adulthood. It is an honours degree programme which is designed to give participants key skills, knowledge and attitude on which to build the capabilities to become a professional practitioner in the fields of childhood and adolescent care and practice.

The programme covers areas such as child and adolescent psychology, child/adolescent counselling, the various legal areas to be aware of when dealing with children & adolescents, management issues and research methodologies. The programme has been designed to be directly related to the needs of professionals working in a range of both childcare and adolescent workplace settings, which increases the employment opportunities of graduates.

Assessment:

Programme assessment methods have been designed to afford students the opportunity to demonstrate their academic and reflective learning in different ways. The programmes accommodate different learning styles and therefore requires learners to engage with a range of practical assignments, essays, learning journals, examinations, reflective exercises, and projects.

Academic Progression: Those who complete the programme may access the level 9 programme M.A in Childhood and Adolescent Studies within ICHAS or programmes at level 9 at other universities and colleges within the National Framework of Qualifications.

Employment potential for graduates spans the complete spectrum of occupations within the child and adolescent sectors.
